Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. About one in seven women that live to age 90 will develop breast cancer. If you have a family history of breast cancer, your chances of developing the disease are much greater. It is a good idea to be well informed about the symptoms of breast cancer.

Symptoms of breast cancer don’t always manifest themselves until the cancer is already in the later stages of growth and may have already spread to other more vital areas of the body. This makes regular breast examination very important. Apart from carrying out self breast examinations, it is important to get mammograms done.

Lumps are a clear indication of breast cancer. Though, not all lumps are cancerous. Many women develop lumps in their breasts, especially during periods of rapid hormonal changes such as puberty and menstruation.

Pain in the breasts is another symptom that you should not ignore. Though, pain in the breasts may not always be because of cancer. Tenderness of the breasts is common during puberty, pregnancy, hormone fluxes and also because of some medications.

Even though breast cancer is frequently diagnosed in women over 40, women in their teens and twenties are occasionally diagnosed as well. Even one percent of men suffer from breast cancer.

It is a good idea to check yourself for lumps. With some experience and consultation with your doctor, you’ll soon get an idea of the kinds of lumps that are normal and the lumps which may cause breast cancer.
