Chin surgery and implants are for people who feel that their chin is too big or too small. Chin surgery can make the chin look smaller while implants can make it look bigger. Chin reduction takes up to four hours and is carried out under general or local anesthetic. The surgeon makes cuts inside the mouth and removes some bone or slides a part of the bone to re-position the chin point. Chin reduction surgery is permanent.
Chin implants take up to two hours per implant. Implants are made of silicone, tissue from your own body or other man-made materials. Implant results are semi-permanent.
Risks include infection, blood loss, swelling, and nerve injury, which can cause numbness of the lips. Implants may also cause scarring and the possibility of excess skin hanging down below the chin or the neck. If the implant gets infected or moves, then it will have to be removed and the surgery involved, is quite complicated.
