Before you opt to have cosmetic surgery, you need to arm yourself with enough information about the procedure. Here are 5 things you should know before going under the knife.
Ask your doctor, consult established websites and ask former patients who have had the procedures about the risks and side effects and recovery period. Educate yourself about the procedure you are considering. Be honest with your doctor about your medical history. And don't just ask about the favorable results.
In some states, any medical doctor can perform plastic surgery. But not all of those doctors are board-certified to perform plastic surgery--which means they have received at least six years of advanced surgical training and gone through rigorous testing by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Look for a surgeon who has specialized in the procedure that you want done.
Where you have your surgery is almost as important as who performs your surgery. About 56 percent of cosmetic procedures are now done outside of hospitals - either at the doctor's office or independent surgery centers. Less than half of the states in America regulate such facilities. Find accredited facilities with excellent safety records.
Have a firm and a realistic idea of what procedure or procedures you want done. Be honest with yourself about your reasons for wanting plastic surgery and find an experienced surgeon who will be honest with you.
Make sure that you have realistic expectations.
