How to Age Gracefully

February 05, 2007 - Chandana Banerjee

Dru Peer is 60, runs a patisserie and dresses with style. Her long hair is not dyed and shines like a sheet of silver. She looks after her skin, exercises and eats well and has no intention of having cosmetic surgery to look younger. “We do have to get old sometime and no amount of cosmetic surgery is going to hide that fact,” says Dru.

We all grow old sometime or the other – it’s just a fact of life. If you take good care of yourself, aging may be an enjoyable process.

Take care of your skin: A good skincare routine is the secret of healthy and glowing skin. Remember to remove your make-up every night before you go to bed. It’s a good idea to moisturize your skin and use an eye cream and a neck cream.

Use Sunscreen: UV rays of the sun can cause wrinkles and sunscreen is a shield that can protect your skin from the harmful rays. Every time you step out of your house, do remember to use sunscreen on the exposed areas of your skin.

Genetic background: Look at your family, examine your genetic background and find out if you have a family history of heart disease or cancer; how the older members of your family are aging. If you do have a family history of heart disease or cancer, then do some research to find out how you can prevent it from happening to you.

Eat healthy: A healthy diet goes a long way in preserving and maintaining one’s health. It’s a good idea to include vegetables and fruits in your diet because they are high in nutrients and vitamins.

Remain active and alert: Just because you’ve retired from your work, doesn’t mean that you have to lead a bored life. You’ve worked hard all you life and now is the time to do things that you enjoy. Indulge in your hobbies – if you’re passionate about painting, knitting or writing, create something vibrant and new. Learn something new by taking a classs in bonsai, reiki, yoga or a new language.

Quit smoking: Smoking is an expensive and toxic habit that can lead to serious health problems. Smoking also wreaks havoc on your skin.
