Liposuction is the latest trend. Liposuction, which involves vacuuming fat from areas including the thighs and ‘love handles’, has jumped from the eighth to the third most popular cosmetic surgery.

The demand for liposuction was revealed in an audit by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). Figures show that 4000 operations were carried out last year, compared with 2100 in 2005.

Plastic surgeons report that many men are approaching them to rid themselves of the extra fat. Some men feel that the male breast can respond well to liposuction. But surgeons warn people that liposuction should not be considered as an alternative to losing weight.

Liposuction is not appropriate for obese people. This technique should be reserved for very specific areas of fat in an otherwise fit person. An ideal candidate for liposuction would be a person who has been exercising and on a healthy diet; but when all this fails to cut down on fat in a particular area, then he or she resorts to liposuction to bail them out.

Overall, leading plastic surgeons carried out 31% more cosmetic surgery operations last year than in 2005. Demand also increased for brow lifts, which saw a 50% rise, eyelid surgery, up 48%, tummy tucks, up 47% and face and neck lifts, up 44%.
