Making Fruits and Vegetables a Way of Life

Our body is like a piggy bank – what we put in is what we get. If we keep stuffing in creamy cakes, cheesy pizzas and food with scoops of butter and fat, then we can’t really expect to have a lean and trim figure. Eating right is often the secret of a healthy body.

Fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fibre, which helps to maintain a healthy body and fight diseases. Try to include a selection of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet because every fruit or vegetable will provide a different nutrient. With just a little bit of planning you can make greens a way of life.

You can begin by having a fruit with your breakfast -  a banana with your bowl of cereal; a glass of orange juice with your toast; or an apple to supplement your sandwich.  You can toss a salad for lunch or add slices of crisp vegetables to your pizza.

You can make your sandwiches with slices of fresh tomato and cucumber; add a handful of vegetables to the stew, soup or pasta; and, add fruits to your dessert – fresh fruits to go with that ice-cream, or a bowl of fruit cream or an apple pie or fruit tart for those with a sweet tooth.  If you like experimenting with food, you could get a cookbook to give you more ideas.

Many fruits and vegatables can make quick pick-me-ups too – a handful of raisins and nuts during your coffee break; grapes, dried apricots, carrot sticks or lettuce when you feel like munching. Just keep a bowlful of different fruits handy, for the times when you want to exercise your jaws.
