A new study has found that 48 per cent of women surveyed said they would be interested in cosmetic surgery and a further 23 per cent would possibly be interested.
The study was undertaken by scientists at the University of California and it also found that interest in surgery was widespread among all ages of women.
Men were found to be less interested with 23 per cent attracted to the idea and 17 per cent possibly considering it.
"This isn’t about poor body image. People interested in cosmetic surgery did not report less satisfaction with their body or face than people who are not interested," said study author David Frederick.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the most popular surgery in the US during 2006 was liposuction with 403,684 operations performed. Breast surgery took second place with 383,886 women going under the knife.
