What is a day spa?
Day spas are facilities dedicated to the relaxation and rejuvenation of the body, mind and spirit. Day spas offer a number of individual and packaged services designed to help maintain/rejuvenate body health and wellness. Day spa services are typically non-medical, though treatments like massage can often be used for medical purposes.

How is a day spa different from a medical spa?
Medical spas are another kind of facility that offers not only the traditional spa services, but also medical treatments such as Botox injections, pain management, and spider vein surgery. Doctors may be medical directors on medical spa.

What to Look for in a Day Spa?
A day spa should be selected based on the individual. Certain spas are specially equipped to provide treatments catering to particular needs; for example, one day spa may be geared towards providing facial therapies and makeovers, while another may be more specialized towards stress/tension relief through the use of specialized massage and body treatments.

What kind of services do day spas offer?
There are a number of somewhat typical day spa services available at most facilities:

  • Facials
  • Massage
  • Waxing
  • Body treatments
  • Skin exfoliation

Facials are cosmetic procedures that are used to treat the skin of the face. Facials are designed to act as a deep cleansing therapy, during which a person′s skin is treated through massaging, toning, exfoliating, steaming, and moisturizing.

Body Treatments are non-medical procedures that are offered at day spas. Some of the common body treatments that are offered at most day spas include body wraps, aromatherapy, mud baths, hot tubs, and saunas.

Skin Exfoliation is a type of non-medical health treatment that is designed to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the face and body. The removal of dead skin cells leaves skin smoother and healthier looking. Micro-bead face scrubs and abrasive cloths are commonly used for exfoliating purposes, while chemical peels offer a more intensive solution to the treatment of dead skin cells.

What about licensing?
All day spa technicians/therapists and the facilities in which they operate must be licensed by the Department of Health and the Board of Cosmetology. Based on the specific services provided by a given day spa, additional licenses may be required.
