More and more women are turning to plastic surgery to fight the ravages that pregnancy has inflicted – sagging breasts, extra weight, loose skin on the tummy, stretch marks. Here are some facts and figures, courtesy American Society of Plastic Surgeons to show how popular plastic surgery and mommy makeovers are becoming:
63,400 — Number of tummy tucks performed on women ages 20-39 in 2006, up more than 10 percent over 2005.
214,000 — Number of breast augmentations performed on that age group in 2006.
48,500 — Number of breast lifts for women ages 20-39 in 2006.
7.2 million — Total number of plastic surgery procedures performed on women last year.
Here are some procedures that women opt for after they’ve had kids and want to get back their pre-pregnancy figure:
A tummy tuck , or abdominoplasty , involves a hip-to-hip incision — usually below the bikini line — to tighten the muscle layer that has been stretched by pregnancy. Excess skin and fat are removed, leaving a flat stomach. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is safe, but you risk overstretching the muscle again.
A breastlift , or mastopexy , can raise and reshape sagging breasts. It is often combined with breast augmentation, inserting breast implants to increase firmness and size.
Liposuction removes fat from areas including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, upper arms, face and neck. A small incision allows surgeons to insert a small tube, which suctions fat from the body.
